BAY AREA TEACHERS ENTER THE CORPORATE WORLD

Almost 200 Bay Area teachers will be spending their summer vacations working in Corporate America under a program that aims to improve math and science education.

The Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education, a non-profit dedicated to improving Bay Area math and science education, launched the Summer Fellowship Program in 1985. The program assigns teachers to a mathematic, scientific or technical project in a sponsoring company or lab.

"Our region's competitiveness and success depend upon the quality of our workforce,'' Silicon Valley Leadership Group CEO Carl Guardino said. "Our member organizations participate in IISME's Summer Fellowship Program not only to benefit from highly skilled teachers with fresh perspectives, but more importantly to have a direct and positive impact on local math and science education.''

This year 195 Bay Area teachers will be participating in the program, which begins June 19.
